EATING processed breakfast cereals and white bread raises the risk of suffering diabetes, heart disease and even cancer, Australian scientists suggest.

A study of almost two million people found those with a high GI (glycemic index) diet increase their chances of suffering a range of lifestyle diseases.

Foods with a high GI rating -- such as highly processed cereals, white breads, potatoes and long-grain rice -- are quickly burned by the body and converted into blood glucose, while low GI foods release energy slowly.

The University of Sydney research found those with a high GI diet have a 40 per cent greater chance of getting diabetes, were 25 per cent more likely to suffer heart disease or gall stones, and also raised their risk of getting breast cancer by 8 per cent.
